Tick control at home: the vet treats the dog, we treat the cracks

A tick feeds on your dog until it's full, then drops off and looks for a crack in the wall or a gap by the baseboard to lay its eggs. Treat the dog and leave the house as it is, and the ticks climb back onto it from those cracks. The animal's treatment comes from the vet. The house is our job.

In short

Tick control at home runs on two tracks at once. A veterinarian treats your dog or cat, while we inspect the cracks, baseboards and pet sleeping spots and apply targeted spraying where we find activity. Because the female tick lays her eggs away from the animal, the inspection decides whether a follow-up visit is needed.

Signs

Signs of ticks in the house and on your dog

The first sign most people notice is a tick climbing a wall or clinging to a curtain, not a tick on the dog. Early on, the numbers are small and easy to miss. Check the animal, its bed and the baseboards, photograph anything you find and send it to us. We'll tell you whether it's a tick or another insect.

  1. A tick climbing the wall or the curtain

A tick crawling up the wall or sitting on the edge of a curtain, usually in the room or on the balcony where the dog sleeps. This is the sign homeowners notice most often, and it sometimes shows up before anyone spots a tick on the dog itself.

  2. A tick attached to the dog

Check the ears, around the eyes, under the collar, under the front legs, between the toes and around the tail. A tick that has filled up on blood swells to about the size of a raisin, so you'll feel it easily as you run your hand through the fur.

  3. Ticks in the dog's bed and on rugs

Ticks turn up on the dog's bed and blanket, and on the rugs, sofas and baseboards next to where it sleeps. If you find a tick there, the cracks and gaps around that spot need an inspection, because a female tick looks for exactly that kind of place to lay her eggs.

  4. A tick attached to someone at home

The brown dog tick prefers dogs, but it can bite people too, usually in its smaller stages. If you find a tick attached to your skin or a child's, remove it as described in the questions below, and let us know so we can look for the source.

  5. What the tick looks like

An adult tick is reddish brown, with a long, narrow body and no markings, and it measures about 2 to 3 mm before it feeds. Adults and nymphs have 8 legs. A newly hatched larva has only 6 and is small enough to go unnoticed.

  6. Found one of these signs? Take a photo and send it to us, and we will tell you whether it is ticks or something else before any visit.

The brown dog tick: the species that lives indoors

Most tick species can get into a home on an animal, but they can’t complete their life cycle inside. The brown dog tick, also known as the kennel tick, is different. It can go through its whole life cycle indoors or outdoors, it thrives in warm places, and the dog is its main host at every stage.

An infestation usually starts with a few ticks that came home on the dog after a visit to a kennel, a grooming salon or a vet clinic. At first there are only a few, and nobody notices. By the time you start seeing ticks on the walls, the infestation has usually been there for a while.

Where do ticks hide in an apartment?

After feeding, a female tick looks for a hidden spot close to the dog. These are the places where our inspection starts:

  • Cracks in the walls and floors, and gaps next to the baseboards.
  • The dog’s bed and blanket, and the sofas and rugs it sleeps on.
  • Walls and curtains in the room or on the balcony where it spends its time, because ticks climb upward.
  • The doghouse in the garden or on the roof, and the garage if the dog sleeps there.

If you find ticks in any of these places, don’t move the dog’s bed to another room before the treatment. Wash it in hot water, or seal it in a bag until the technician arrives.

If you keep chickens, pigeons or goats on the roof, or run a farm with guard dogs, tell the technician at the start so they inspect those places too. A dog that moves back and forth between them and the apartment can carry ticks from one place to the other.

From egg to egg-laying tick in about 2 months

A female tick feeds on the dog for about a week and grows to roughly the size of a raisin. Then she drops off and lays her eggs in a crack, about 4,000 on average and sometimes more than 7,000. The eggs hatch in 6 to 23 days. The tiny larva finds the dog, feeds for 5 to 15 days, and molts into a nymph 1 to 2 weeks later. The nymph goes through the same routine, then becomes an adult tick.

From egg to a new female laying her own eggs, the whole journey takes a little over 2 months when the weather is warm and the dog is around. In cold weather, or when there’s no dog, it takes longer. At every stage, a tick can last 3 to 5 months without feeding.

The brown dog tick also spreads diseases to dogs. If your dog seems unwell some time after the ticks appeared, even weeks later, take it to the vet.

When should you call a tick control company?

Call when the vet has treated your dog and you’re still finding ticks on the wall or in its bed 2 weeks later, when ticks show up in more than one room, or when you have many dogs in a garden or a kennel. That’s the point where the place itself needs treatment. A single female tick that drops off your dog today can lay thousands of eggs in a crack you can’t see.

Send a photo of the tick and of the dog’s sleeping spot on WhatsApp to +201007892200, and tell us when the dog was treated if you know. It helps us plan the inspection before the technician sets out, and the visit can be the same day in any of Egypt’s 27 governorates. Every other way to reach us is on the contact page.

Why it comes back

Why do ticks come back after the dog is treated?

Because many ticks aren't on the dog at all. A female feeds for about a week, then drops off to lay her eggs in a crack in a wall, the garage or the doghouse. The eggs hatch in 6 to 23 days and the larvae head back to the dog. Leave the place untreated and the cycle continues.

4,000eggs laid at once by one tick

Some tick species lay their eggs away from the animal, in sheltered spots. Checking the place while your vet treats the animal helps you deal with the whole life cycle.

  1. The eggs are away from the dog

A fed tick leaves the dog and picks a hidden spot, such as a crack in the wall, a gap by the baseboard, a corner of the garage or the doghouse. The eggs stay there until they hatch, and no treatment on the dog's body reaches them.

  2. They last for months without food

The brown dog tick can survive 3 to 5 months at each stage without feeding. So if the dog stays somewhere else for a while, the ticks in the cracks don't die. They wait until it comes back.

  3. Spraying the floor alone misses the ticks on the dog

It works the other way too. If the house is sprayed while the dog still carries ticks, those ticks finish feeding and drop off to lay eggs all over again. That's why we ask for the dog to be treated by the vet during the same period that we treat the house.

  4. Ticks can resist common sprays

In some places, brown dog ticks have been recorded with high resistance to some widely used pesticides. Using more of the same spray won't fix that. The product and the way it's applied are chosen after the inspection, case by case.

Treatment

How our tick treatment works, step by step

The work follows 5 steps, and one of them happens at the vet's, not with us. We start with questions and photos before the visit, then some simple preparation, an inspection of every corner your pet uses, targeted spraying in the cracks, and a follow-up if the inspection shows one is needed. We explain each step before we start it.

  1. Questions and photos before the visit

We ask how many dogs or cats you have, where they sleep, exactly where you've seen the ticks, and whether there are children or a pregnancy at home. One photo of a tick next to a 1-pound coin shows us its size and type from the very first message.

  2. The pet goes to the vet

A veterinarian treats your dog or cat and picks the right treatment for the animal's species, weight and age. Ideally this happens in the same week that we treat the house, so the ticks on the animal don't go back to lay eggs in the cracks.

  3. Getting the place ready

Wash the dog's bed and blanket in hot water and dry them on high heat, or seal them in a bag if they're going in the trash. Move anything standing against the walls and baseboards in the room or on the balcony where the dog sleeps, so the technician can reach the cracks.

  4. Inspecting cracks and pet areas

The technician inspects the cracks in walls and floors, the baseboards, the area around the dog's bed, and the sofas and rugs where it lies. If the dog spends time in the garden, on the roof or in the garage, the inspection covers those as well. This tells us exactly where to spray.

  5. Targeted spraying, and a follow-up if needed

The spray goes into cracks, gaps and the spots with activity, never on the dog and never into the air of the room. Some cases need a second treatment after the eggs hatch. We decide that after the inspection and tell you before you confirm the booking.

Safety

Is tick spraying safe for dogs and children?

It depends on the product, the spraying method and who lives in the house. Before the visit we ask about children, pregnancy, allergies and every animal you have, and tell you where to take the pets and when to bring them back. We spray the cracks and the spots with activity, and the vet treats the animal itself.

  • Dogs and cats during spraying

Take the animals out while we spray, and don't bring them back until the technician tells you to. Never put a household pesticide on your dog. Cats in particular are very sensitive to many products, so ask the vet before giving a cat any tick treatment.

  • Children and pregnancy

Tell us on the first call. When you can go back into the area depends on the product and the spraying method, and a baby who crawls and plays on the floor should stay away from the baseboards and treated spots until they're completely dry. If someone swallows a pesticide by mistake, call an ambulance on 123 right away.

  • If a tick attaches to someone

Grip it with fine-tipped tweezers as close to the skin as you can and pull it straight up, gently, without twisting. If a rash or fever appears in the weeks after, see a doctor and tell them a tick was attached to you, when it happened and roughly where you picked it up.

  • Ask about the product

Ask for the product's name and details before the technician starts. That's your right. If anyone at home has a chest allergy or asthma, tell us at the start so we choose the spraying method with that in mind.

Who it is for

Tick control for homes, farms and dog facilities

The brown dog tick follows the dog. Dogs pick up ticks at kennels, grooming salons, vet clinics or infested homes, then the ticks drop off and settle in. So the problem shows up in an apartment with one dog and in places with many dogs. The difference is how big the inspection is and how many areas it covers.

Homes and apartments

In an apartment, ticks usually start where the dog sleeps, whether that's a bedroom, a balcony or a corner of the living room. If you have a villa with a garden, or a roof with birds or other animals, the inspection covers those too. Send us photos of the ticks and of the dog's sleeping spot, and we'll tell you the next step.

Send details of your home

Businesses and offices

Kennels, training centers, vet clinics and pet grooming salons see new dogs every day, and farms, stables and guarded sites have dogs living on site all the time. Here the plan covers every cage and kennel block, a follow-up schedule, and instructions that help staff check each new dog before it comes in.

Price

What sets the price of tick control?

No single price fits every case. An apartment with one infested room is not the same as a whole apartment, and a home is not the same as a business. The cost depends on these four factors, and we explain it in detail before you confirm the booking, with no surprise charges after the visit.

  1. Size and type of placeA 90-square-meter apartment is not the same job as a villa with a garden, and a restaurant is not the same as a warehouse.
  2. Type of pestEach pest needs its own product and method. Gel bait for cockroaches, bait stations for rats and mice, and wood injection for woodworm.
  3. How far it has spreadA first sighting a week ago is different from an infestation that has been there for months. That is why we ask for photos and signs.
  4. How many visits the case needsSome cases need a follow-up or an extra visit. We decide that after checking which insects or rodents are involved and how far they have spread.

Questions

Common questions about ticks

These are the questions people in Egypt ask most about ticks, with answers from our daily work. If yours is not here, type it in the box below. It lands in our WhatsApp, and one of the team replies about your exact situation.

Where do ticks in the house come from?

Usually on the dog. Dogs pick up ticks from a kennel, a grooming salon, a vet clinic or an infested home, or from the street and the garden. Pets that go outside can bring ticks into the house, and once indoors, the ticks can bite people too.

Can I have ticks in the house without a dog?

It's possible, but a large infestation needs a dog to feed on. Brown dog ticks can last 3 to 5 months at each stage without feeding, so if a dog lived there before you moved in, or there's one on the roof or next door, ticks may still be around. If no animal is nearby, send us a photo.

Are ticks dangerous to humans?

They can be. Ticks carry germs that cause disease in people, and the disease depends on the type of tick and the place. Brown dog ticks also pass diseases to dogs, so ask your vet. If you get a rash or a fever within weeks of a tick bite, see a doctor and tell them when you were bitten.

How do I remove a tick from the skin?

With clean, fine-tipped tweezers. Grip the tick as close to the surface of the skin as you can and pull upward with steady pressure, without twisting or jerking. Then wash the bite and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Don't crush it with your fingers, and don't put petroleum jelly, nail polish or anything hot on it.

Do bleach, vinegar or kerosene kill ticks?

The scientific sources we rely on don't recommend bleach, vinegar or kerosene for ticks. What they recommend is washing the dog's bedding in hot water, sealing cracks, having the vet treat the dog and treating the infested areas. Never put kerosene or bleach on an animal's skin.

What's the difference between ticks and bed bugs?

An adult tick has 8 legs, stays attached to the skin for days while it feeds, and is usually found on the dog or climbing a wall. A bed bug has 6 legs, bites at night, then hides again in mattress seams and bed frame cracks. If you're not sure, send us a photo on WhatsApp.

Do cats get ticks?

Yes. The brown dog tick sometimes feeds on cats, although the dog is its main host. Cats are very sensitive to many products, so don't put any tick treatment on a cat before asking the vet, even if it's the same treatment you use on your dog.
